The town of Clonakilty is in the civil parish of Kilgarriff. It is located within the poor law union of Clonakilty, in the barony of East Carbery, eastern division.
Clonakilty Union lies in the baronies of Ibane & Barryroe and East Carbery (eastern and western divisions). It did not originally come into existence with the Irish Poor Law Act of 1838; the area was part of the Bandon, Dunmanway, and Skibbereen unions. The Union of Clonakilty came into being later at the end of the famine.
Clonakilty Union is in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cork & Ross.

N71 runs directly through Clonakilty. Going west from Clonakilty, N71 runs through Rosscarbery. Going east, the road angles northward. Turn east on R600 to head towards Timoleague.
The R599 junction is just west of Clonakilty town. Stay on it to get to Dunmanway.
R588 angles north of out town. Stay on it to get to Enniskeane.
