A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland (Lewis, 1837)

Abbeystrowry is the monastery of the streams. Prior to Mainistir na Sruthra, earlier spellings included Mainistir Inchrie and Inse an Ri.

The Abbeystrowry part of Skibbereen was called Bridgetown and belonged to the Townsends.

1172The abbey was a sub-branch of the Cistercian Abbey de Sancto Mauro in Myross, founded by Desmond king Dermot McCarthy on that date.
