Historical Description

The Union of Skull was originally part of the Union of Skibbereen. Skull Poor Law Union was formed late in the famine era. The area may have been once known as Kilmore.

The town of Skull is in the civil parish of Skull. It is located within the poor law union of Skull, in the barony of West Carbery, Western Division.

Skull Union lies in the barony of West Carbery (Western Division). Some of the islands in Roaringwater Bay may have been enumerated under West Carbery (Eastern Division).

Skull Union is in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cork & Ross.

Description

R592, part of the Wild Atlantic Way, goes directly through Skull. The road continues northeast through Ballydehob.

East of Ballydehob, one leg of N71 (Cork Road) continues through Kilcoe, and on towards Skibbereen.

At that same junction, N71 angles north to Bantry.
