Historical Description

The town of Fermoy is in the civil parish of Fermoy. It is located within the poor law union of Fermoy, in the barony of Condons & Clangibbon.

Fermoy Union lies in the baronies of Condons & Clangibbon, Fermoy, and Barrymore. It lies in the Parliamentary Division of Northeast Cork.

Fermoy Union is in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cloyne. A small portion (Watergrasshill) may lie in the Diocese of Cork.

In 954, Donogh Mac Keefe, one of the chieftains out of Feara Maighe-Feine, fought the Danes.

In 1170, the Cistercian abbey Our Lady of de Castro Dei was founded, by the Roche family.

In 1690, Fermoy was attacked by troops of James II.

In 1791, John Anderson, a transplant from Scotland, built a hotel, with ambitions of transforming Fermoy into a more commercial town.

Description

The M8 motorway runs through Fermoy, coming in from Watergrass Hill to the south, on towards Mitchelstown to the north.

N72 runs through Fermoy in an east-west orientation. Coming in from Mallow to the west, it is called Mallow Road. It turns abruptly south, then jogs east again, towards Carrigabrick.

Fermoy Union is in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cloyne. A small portion (Watergrasshill) may lie in the Diocese of Cork.
