The town of Fermoy is in the civil parish of Fermoy. It is located within the poor law union of Fermoy, in the barony of Condons & Clangibbon.

In 1791, John Anderson, a transplant from Scotland, built a hotel, with ambitions of transforming Fermoy into a more commercial town.

The M8 motorway runs through Fermoy, coming in from Watergrass Hill to the south, on towards Mitchelstown to the north.
N72 runs through Fermoy in an east-west orientation. Coming in from Mallow to the west, it is called Mallow Road. It turns abruptly south, then jogs east again, towards Carrigabrick.
