(CE 6/2/1846) - TO THE EDITOR OF THE CORK EXAMINER - Cape Clear, Feb., 3rd, 1846 - SIR - A large and influential meeting of the inhabitants of this Island was held last Sunday, after Mass, in the parish chapel, the Rev. John B. Noonan, our respected PP, presided, and after a few pertinent remarks as to the object of the meeting, which was to take into consideration the state of the potato crop, he said, he hoped that they would state candidly the extent of their losses in that way, and that no one would come forward with any exaggerated cases, and that the truth alone was the only thing me expected to hear from them. It would be in vain, for me to attempt to follow the different speakers who addressed the Chair, or, to give even a faint description of their woe-begone countenances. I shall only remark, that each and every one of them ended by saying that he lost more than half his potatoes, and that what remained was fast running into a state of decomposition. There was not one at the meeting who said he could hold out until the 1st of May, whilst the generality of them said they could not hold on until Easter Sunday. - This is an alarming state of things in this remote and insulated locality, where the people are all small holders, and chiefly dependant on the potato crop for their subsistence. Their only hope, under Heaven, is on the landlord, to whom they pay hundreds annually. It is true some of them were afraid to advert to the landlord at all, lest they should thereby incur his displeasure, and be treated as the poor man was the other day by the two Parsons, at Creagh, who have by their conduct towards that unfortunate creature deserved the just indignation of every humane person in the community. I think much credit is due to Mr. Jeremiah O Callaghan of Skibbereen, for bringing to light this affair, and, as one of the worthies has something to do with this island in the shape of agent or receiver, I am afraid to say any more about him, lest I should excite his reverence's displeasure. After passing a vote of thanks unanimously, to the Editor of the Cork Examiner for his able and lucid statements regarding the distress of the country, the meeting quietly separated. - Your obedient servant, WILLIAM HAYES

A RETURN OF DEATHS AND EMIGRATIONS

IN THE WESTERN DIVISION OF THE SKIBBEREEN UNION,
FROM THE 1ST OF SEPT., 1846 TO THE 12TH SEPT., 1847

_______________________________

(CE 8/10/1847) - SKULL - SKIBBEREEN - The following Resolutions were unamimously agreed to on the 28th day of SEPTEMBER, 1847, at a Meeting of the Relief Committee for the Electoral Divisions of WEST SKULL and EAST SKULL, in the Western Division of the SKIBBEREEN UNION:-JOHN LIMRICK, Esq., JP, in the Chair. - RESOLVED - That at the close of our labours, as Committees, we present our grateful acknowledgements to the Relief Commissioners for their attention and great liberality in dealing with the diastrous wants of the Poor in those Electoral Divisions, and as a proof of the great good effects here by the operation of the 'Temporary Relief Act,' and as a criterion by which the Public may judge of the good results of that 'Act' generally, we subjoin a copy of a Statistical Return, made with great correctness, under the directions of J. J. MARSHALL, Esq., Inpecting Officer for this District, shewing at one view the very great mortality which preceeded, and the equally great decrease of such mortality which followed the introduction of that measure. - RESOLVED - That considering the deplorable state in which the Poor of those Divisions were when the Government Inspecting Officer was appointed to bring the Temporary Relief Act into operation; the many apparent insuperable difficulties which seemed to oppose the prompt introduction of the measure; the zeal and untiring perseverance with which he laboured to overcome those difficulties; the judicious method and practical knowledge evinced by him, and, finally, the successful issue to which his powerful aid brought the labours of the Committee, we feel bound to congratulate the Relief Commisioners on their fortunate selection of so efficient an officer, and to tender MR. MARSHALL the humble meed of our sincere gratitude for his kind demeanour to us, for his benevolent sympathy for the Poor, and for his valuable suggestions and assistance to increase the resources of the District. - JOHN LIMRICK, JP, Chairman, West Skull Relief Committee. - JAMES BARRY, PP, Vice-Chairman, East Skull Relief Committee. - Skull, 28th Sept., 1847

TOWNSEND ESTATE EVICTIONS 1849

(CE 13/7/1849) - EVICTIONS - A Correspondent sends us a list of persons evicted from the Townsend estate, near Skibbereen, since the first of March 1847. We shall confine ourselves to giving the simple statement of the names of the parties, without the comments prefixed by our Correspondent. He states, however, that in the case of certain evcitions from the property of the O DONOVAN, alluded to in a former communication, due notice had not been served upon the Relieving Officers of the district; and that the parties were not admitted to the Workhouse until three days afterwards. Whether this statement be true or not, we are unable to affirm; but the matter is said to be under investigation by the authorities. We must again imperatively impress upon our Correspondents in general the necessity fo adhering as scrupulously as possible to the mere relation of facts. These possess a force, which comment usaully tends to diminish instead of increase.
