2There are only two Protestant Familys in this Parish, - viz:- 1nd Mr. George Mt. Gomery, whose children and servants are all Protestants – 8 males and 4 females. – and 2nd Mr. Richard Thornell, also the same (all Protestant) – 4 males & 3 females.
It appears by the above list that there are 180 Popish Families in the Parish of Marshalstown, containing 1,040 persons of whom 502 are males and 538 are females, - and all of them Papists.
No Popish Priest or Frier lives in the parish but a reputed Popish Frier, Timothy Rourke, who resides in Mitchelstown, the next parish to it, and is said to be a Substitute to a Popish Titular Bishop who enjoys this and some other contiguous parishes, doth all the duties for the Inhabitants; - though sometimes or often other Friers attend the Popish Service on Sundays and holydays, whose names I cannot recollect as they are frequently changed and I suppose of a travailing begging order.
This return, as ordered, is made for the Parish of Marshalstown, in the Diocess of Cloyne, by me – Thomas Tuckey, Vicar.
1766 RELGIOUS CENSUS OF BRIGOWN

My Lord – Above, your Lordship will find a Return of the several Families in this Parish, pursuant to a late order presented me from Cloyne by your Lordships’ directions. I have taken the names of every family, and if the above return should not answer the design I will change it into any form your Lordship will prescribe. – Who am, my Lord, your Lordships’ most obedient and dutiful Servant – Wm. Nash – Mitchelstown 4th April 1766

(CC 22/4/1826) – ROBBERY NEAR MITCHELSTOWN – On Sunday night last, at ten o clock, the house of Mr. JOHN FITZGIBBON, of Broom-hill, near Mitchelstown, was entered by 10 or 12 robbers. Their faces were blackened. After demanding the keys and laying hands on everything of value, they sat down very deliberately, and treated themselves to plenty of spirits and cold meat. Mr. FITZGIBBON, who happened to dine from home, arrived just in time to be seized by the rascals: - they made him swear to deliver all the money in his possession, which he did, being about 71. We have not heard that any of those marauders have been yet apprehended.

(CE 10/9/1845) Reports to a Meeting of the Loyal National Repeal Association, Burgh Quay, Dublin, 9/9/1845.
MITCHELSTOWN, COUNTY CORK, 14TH OCTOBER, 1842
Informants – Rev. Mr. M’Carthy, Walter Barry, Esq., Messrs. Laffan, Whelan, Tobin, Healy, O Keeffe, O Mahony, and several others. - About the year 1786 the command of a copious water power and the rising condition of the town induced Messrs. Sadler and Baldwin to erect a factory for making coarse cotton and muslin goods, at an outlay of probably £20,000. The most prosperous career was from that to about 1806 or 1807, when a general decline commenced and the factory ceased entirely about 1813. It gave employment to 300 persons. The weavers earned from 16s. to 18s., the others from 4s. to 6s. per week. The operatives were scattered in want and beggary. - The town is the property of the Earl of Kingston. It presents the appearance of what would be called by enthusiastic tourists ‘rapid improvement,’ for one-half of its extent has been newly built within the last sixteen or seventeen years, yet it might be difficult to account for the object of abandoning the roofless ruin of the original and more extensive section. - Mitchelstown has six cattle fairs in the year, and is yet a considerable market town for corn and butter, but the traffic in the latter commodity has greatly declined. - It is well circumstanced for manufacturers. There are capital mill-sites on the Funcheon and Bradogue, in the heart of the town, and within a mile radius. - House rents are declining, and business falling off; a gayer exterior and struggling condition, contrasts with the former quiet appearance but wealthy state of the trading houses. - At the period of my visit the tradesmen of the town obtained constant employment from the building mania. Masons, slaters, and carpenters, had 2s. 6d. per day, with a prospect of continuance for some time.

0.10.0DEAR AND RESPECTED SIR, Mr. WALTER BARRY, (Secretary to the O CONNELL TRIBUTE in this Parish,) has handed me £66.12.6 to be remitted to the proper quarter. To his unceasing and indefatigable exertions, as well as thos of our respective Repeal Wardens, are due the marked thanks of the Catholic Clergy of this Parish. They at least emulate, if not outstrip us in the cause of Country; and leave us to be employed in our sacred and professional duties, while they are the faithful repositories of the Liberator’s confidence, and conscientiously and prudently discharge the duties of their office. To them also must be given the credit of the collection of £100 Repeal Rent within the last twelve months. – For myself I must say I feel great pleasure in having so many honest and earnest fellow-labourers, as well as great pride in being the old, honest, and constant friend our our illustrious Liberator, as well as the Very humble Servant of your’s, - respectfully, JOHN O CONNELL, - Mitchelstown, December 18, 1843.

0.10.0RESPECTED and Dear Sir, - Our zealous and indefatigable Repeal Wardens have handed me £44 6s 2d, for which I send a letter of credit on the Cork National Bank. The few doing any business here, contribute spiritedly; the Tradespeople, if they had employment would be more generous, but the great majority of our population are agricultural labourers, who are in a deplorable state of destitution, and consequently unable to contribute anything. - The contribution is not as large as the Wardens could wish, but it is the free offering of a people who are grateful for past services; and who shall never be backward when a constitutional struggle is to be made for the happiness of Ireland or the rights of her people. - I am, dear and respected Sir, your faithful servant, JOHN O CONNELL - P.S. – Please to have this letter, with the list of Subscribers’ names, published in the next number of the Examiner.

(CE 24/11/1845) – O CONNELL TRIBUTE – MITCHELSTOWN - November 20th 1845 – Dear Sir – I beg leave to inform you that the collection for the tribute is progressing in this locality; but in consequence of the numerous and onerous duties of our respected Clergymen, it has not as yet been furnished. I understand that one of our universally esteemed curates, the Rev. Mr. M’Carthy, is quite on the alert; and his influence and the spirit of the people will prove satisfactory in the promotion of the cause to which every Irishman ought to be entirely devoted. You shall know the result in due time. - Yours respectfully, G. O NEILL

0.5.0Mitchelstown, Dec. 19, 1845 – DEAR SIR – You have enclosed a Bank order for £34 16s being amount collected for the O Connell Tribute in this Parish for the present year. The sum would have been much larger, but that a collection is now being made throughout the parish for the purpose of furnishing our Chapel, a matter of pressing necessity, and which engages the constant attention of our Parish Priest. But whatever claims the people have to meet, the claim of the Liberator on the gratitude and support of his Countrymen should be foremost and the Irish people would be the most degraded and ungrateful of human beings, did they not cheerfully contribute to the National Fund for the sustainment of the greatest and best of living patriots. - I am, Dear Sir, truly yours, - WALTER BARRY
