(HC 27/11/1769) – From good authority we are informed that on Wednesday last, the noted Highwayman, known by the name of Thunder, was seen drinking at an Alehouse within a few miles of Mallow, where he spent some hours, gave drink to all persons who would accept of it, had money in great plenty, was well armed, and after drinking very plentifull har… braved several persons to take him, acknowledging who he was. He soon after broke open the Stable Door of the said House, and took thereout a Gentleman’s Horse with which he rode off a few miles, but in some time sent back by a Boy he met on the Road.
(Tuckey's Cork Remembrancer) - AD 1770 - Feb 13 - A notorious highway robber, known by the name of Thunder, who had been the terror of this county for a considerable time past, was shot in endeavouring to escape, having been taken to a place within two miles of Mallow, where he was surrounded by a number of gentlemen; his body was brought to this city for public example.
(HC 22/2/1770) – This day was committed to the County Gaol, by Denham Jephson, Esq; John Scanlan and Henry Bateman his Step Son, both living near Mallow, being vehemently suspected of the murder of William Fitz Gerald, otherwise Thunder.

(HC 12/4/1770) – WILLIAM BURGESS, Grocer, in Mallow – HAS lately imported the following articles in the grocery way, which he will sell by wholesale and retail for the smallest profit. – Choice claret, port, preniac, fron…, beziers and malaga wines, by the hhd, quartercask, dozen or gallon; right good Bordeaux vinegar; rum brandy, …., geneva, oils, olives, anchovies, capers, French cordials, syrup of cappillaire and perfume of all kinds, which he will engage to be as good in their kinds as any imported into this kingdom. He hopes for the continuance of the custom of his friends and the public, as he will make it his constant study to give universal content to all who are pleased to deal with him.
(HC 17/5/1770) – A Gentleman near Mallow has laid before us a new invented method of hatching chickens and rearing them quicker for the spit than was ever before discovered; The process is as follows :- the chickens are to be taken away from the hen the night after hatched, and are to be replaced with eggs on which the hen will continue to sit, for a second and a third brood. When first taken from the hen, they are to be fed with eggs, boiled hard and chopped fine, mixed with bread, as larks and other birds are fed, for a fortnight, after which give them oatmeal and treacle, so mixed that it will crumble, of which the chickens are so fond, and with which they will thrive so fat, that at two months end they will be as large as full grown fowls.
