PIGOT'S DIRECTORY 1824 - KANTURK

IN the county of Cork, is distant 128 miles south west of Dublin, 26 north west of Cork, 10 west of Mallow, 18 north of Macroom, and 13 south west of Doneraile. It is a post town, through which flow the rivers Allo and Dallno. The church is entirely destitute of ornament; but there is a commodious Roman Catholic chapel, and a free school founded by the Kildare-street Society. Sessions in future are to be held at this town on the first of June. Not far distant are the remains of a castle, begun in the reign of Elizabeth by an Irish chieftain named Mac Donnough M'Carthy; the policy of the Queen would not, however, suffer him to finish it; for when he was on the point of roofing the building, her orders arrived, desiring him to relinquish his task. It has lately been repaired by order of Lord Egmont. The market is held on Saturday, and there are fairs on the 17th of March, the 4th of May, the 4th of July, the 29th of September, the 4th of November, and the 11th of December.

POST OFFICE - Post Master, Mr. Stephen Williams. The mails from Dublin and Mallow arrive every Saturday, Wednesday and Friday evening, at a quarter before eight, and depart every Monday, Thursday and Saturday morning at six.

KANTURK - Lewis' Topographical Dictionary 1837 - KANTURK, a market and post-town, partly in the parish of KILBRIN, but chiefly in that of CLONFERT, barony of DUHALLOW, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 27 miles (N.W) from Cork, on the Bogra road to Abbeyfeale, and 131 ½ miles (S.W) from Dublin, containing 1349 inhabitants. This place formerly belonged to the McCarthys, kings of Desmond. In the reign of Queen Elizabeth, Mac Donogh Carthy commenced the erection of a splendid and extensive mansion in the castellated style, about a mile south of the town (now called Kanturk Castle), but it having been represented to the government as a regular fortress, its progress was stayed, and it has never been completed. These possessions were subsequently mortgaged by Dermod Mac Owen Carthy to Sir Philip Perceval, by whom they were held as security in 1641, when the proprietor was in actual rebellion; and in 1666 the Court of Claims decided that, as Sir Philip had advanced more than the value of the estate, his grandson, Sir Philip Perceval, was legally entitled, and he accordingly passed patent for the same in 1667. Kanturk Castle, although not actually within the parish in which the town is situated, is deserving of some notice from its name, and also from its connection with the founder of Kanturk. It is situated in the vicinity of the mountains and the river Blackwater, and occupies the four sides of a quadrangle, 120 feet in length by 80 feet in breadth, being three stories high, and flanked at each angle by a square tower of four stories, having three windows in each story in the central portion; the quoins, mouldings, beltings, and other ornamental parts are of hewn stone. The battlements, if ever carried up, have fallen down; and the additional story mentioned by Smith, in his history of Cork, is only apparent on one side, where it forms the under-ground or cellar-floor. The town is pleasantly situated at the confluence of the rivers Allua and Dallua, which here flow through a fine open valley in the midst of gently rising hills, and the vicinity is studded with comfortable farm-houses and young planta tions. Each river is crossed by a good stone bridge; that over the Allua consisting of six, and that on the Dallua of five, segmental arches. It is irregularly built, consisting of several short streets chiefly diverging from the centre; and in 1831 contained 238 houses, many of which have been lately rebuilt, and a new street has been formed between the two rivers, terminating towards the north by a commodious hotel sur rounded by a thriving plantation. These and other improvements have been effected under the auspices of the Earl of Egmont, the propri etor of the greater part of the town, which is considered extremely healthy as a place of residence, and is well supplied with water. A news-room is supported by subscription. Public cars from Tralee and Abbeyfeale to Cork pass through the town, and a car goes direct thence to Cork. The market is on Saturday, and is abundantlysupplied with all kinds of provisions, and from Christmas to Easter with corn, pigs, and sheep; and fairs for cattle and general farming stock are held on March 17th, May 4th, July 4th, Sept. 29th, Nov. 3rd, and Dec. 11th. A small brewery has been lately established in the town; and in the immediate vicinity on the river Dallua, are the extensive boulting-mills of Dr. Barry a portion of the produce of which, and of another on a smaller scale near the Castle, is sent to Cork, where it is shipped for England: the former of these mills is capable of manufacturing 12,000 bags of flour annually, and has proved of great advantage to the neigh bouring farmers, by affording them a ready market for their corn, which previously they were under the necessity of sending to Cork. Quarter sessions for the East Riding are held here in June; petty ses sions are held every Saturday; and a court for the manor of Kanturk is held by the seneschal, once in three weeks, in which debts not exceed ing 40s. late currency are recoverable. The sessions-house and bridewell are substantial and commodious buildings: the former has a handsome front of hewn stone, consisting of a pediment supported by broad pilasters, with a Venetian window between them; the latter is on a large scale, consisting of several wards, and having separate day-rooms and yards adapted for the proper classification of the male and female prisoners. A chief constabulary police force is stationed in the town.

The district of Kanturk was formed out of the parish of Clonfert, and is a perpetual curacy, in the diocese of Cloyne, and in the gift of the Bishop: the curate's stipend is £150, payable in equal portions by the impropriator, the rector, and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The glebe-house, in the vicinity, was erected in 1815, the Board of First Fruits having granted a gift of £450 and a loan of £50: attached to it is a glebe of 10 acres. The church is a small neat structure, with a square embattled tower surmounted by pinnacles, built in 1789, for which the same Board gave £200. In the R. C. divisions the town is the head of a district, which comprises about one-third of the parish of Clonfert and the small ecclesiastical parish of Kilcorcoran. The chapel is a remarkably neat cruciform building, erected on a site given by the Earl of Egmont; the chapel-yard, which is tastefully planted, and forms an agreeable promenade for the inhabitants, is entered by a handsome gateway formed of pillars of hewn stone, surmounted by richly crocketed pinnacles, the work of a native artist, who also exe cuted a beautiful font for the chapel. At Coolavota is a chapel for the rural district. The parochial school is under the superintendence of the Protestant clergyman, and a large building for a public school has been lately erected on a site given by the Earl of Egmont: there are also several private schools in the town and its vicinity; the total num ber of children educated is about 250. At Curragh was formerly a cas tle that belonged to the Mc Carthys, on the site of which the modern mansion of Neptune Blood, Esq., has been erected. Near it is a strong chalybeate spring. Kanturk Castle, which is actually within the bor der of the adjoining parish of Kilmeen, consists of a parallelogram, 120 feet in length by 80 in breadth, with a large square tower at each angle: though never completed, it is carried to a considerable height, and from its massive appearance has a grand and imposing effect. The celebrated lawyer, Barry Yelverton, afterwards Lord Avonmore, Was born at Kanturk

KILCORCORAN - Lewis' Topographical Dictionary 1837 - KILCORCORAN, a parish, in the barony of DUHALLOW, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 2 miles (N. by W) from Kanturk, on the road to Newmarket; containing 506 inhabitants. This small parish, which consists only of the towniands of Rossrine and Coolavota, is entirely isolated by the parish of Kilbrin, into which it has merged for civil purposes. It is an impropriate cure, in the diocese of Cloyne, and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter, of whose economy fund the tithes, amounting to £60, form a part, and who allow the perpetual curate of Kanturk a small stipend for performing the occasional duties. In the R. C. divisions it forms part of the district of Kanturk, and has a chapel at Coolavota. The ruins of the ancient church still remain in the burial-ground.

Death Notice, (CE 30/7/1845) - At the house of Charles M'Carthy, Esq., Kanturk, on the 23d. inst., James, son of the late James Ahern, Esq., of Liscarroll, aged 20 years. Having been there but a few days on his return from Baltimore, United States. Decline, produced by the climate he had left put a speedy end to his promising career. Escaping the dangers of a long and hazardous voyage and spending his last moments under the roof of an affectionate and attached sister, he felt rejoiced and thankful to Providence that his remains were to be deposited with those of his ancestors, in the land of his birth. The grave has seldom closed upon a young gentleman of his age possessing more amiability of manner and promising talent of a high order. He will be long regretted by those to whom he was most dear, and all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. May he rest in peace.

SLATER'S 1846 DIRECTORY - KANTURK

IS a market town, partly in the parish of Kilbrin, but chiefly in that of Clonfert, barony of Duhallow, county of Cork, 163 miles SW from Dublin, 24 NW from Cork, 23 N from Macroom, 16 SW from Doneraile, and 10 W from Mallow; seated on the banks of the Allna and Dallna, whose streams flow through the town. Kanturk, which is irregularly built, consists of several small streets, chiefly diverging from the centre, together with a new one called Egmont-place, which terminates towards the north, where is situated an elegant and commodious hotel, surrounded by a plantation. Many of the old houses here have been re-built and other improvements effected under the auspices of the late Earl of Egmont. In the vicinity of the river Dallna, are the extensive corn mills of Messrs Barry and Mr. William Leader - the latter, Gurteen Mills, situated about two miles from the town. An immense business is done by these two establishments, which are of great advantage to the neighbouring farmers, by affording a ready market for their corn, which they were previously obliged to send to Cork. A branch of the Bank of Ireland is established here. The sessions-house and bridewell are substantial and commodious buildings; the former has a handsome front of hewn stone: the latter is upon a large scale, adapted for the convenient classification of the prisoners. Petty sessions are held every Saturday, and general sessions in June and December.

The parish church is a small neat structure, with a square embattled tower, surmounted by pinnacles. The Roman Catholic chapel is cruciform, commodious within, and neat externally. The chapel-yard is tastefully planted, and affords a pleasant promenade; it is entered by a very handsome gateway, formed of pillars of hewn stone, surmounted with richly crocketted pinnacles, the work of a native artist, the late Tobias Vanston. A free school, under the superintendence of the Board of Education, and a dispensary, are the principal charities. Not far distant are the remains of a castle, begun in the reign of Elizabeth by an Irish chieftain named Carty M'Donogh: the policy of the queen would not, however, suffer him to finish it; for, when he was on the point of roofing the building, her orders compelled him to relinquish his intention. It occupies the four sides of a quadrangle, one hundred and twenty feet in length by eighty in breath, being three stories high, and flanked, at each angle, by a square tower of four stories, exhibiting, perhaps, the most perfect remains of the Elizabethan style of architecture now extant. The market is held on Saturday, and is abundantly supplied with all kinds of provisions. Fairs, March 17th, May 4th, July 4th, September 29th, November 3rd, and December 11th, for cattle, &c. The population of the town, according to the returns made in 1841, was 4,388

(CE 28/10/1864) - DEATH OF JEREMIAH H. O'CALLAGHAN, ESQ. - WE regret to have to announce the death of this very popular and highly esteemed gentleman, who died on Tuesday, the 25th inst., in the 47th year of his age, after a protracted illness, which he bore with Christian fortitude and resignation. To those who remember the prominent position which Mr. O'Callaghan occupied in connection with the turf - his untiring energy in promoting the success of field sport, and his singular judgement in all matters relating thereto - is unnecessary to remark on the incalculable loss which his death will be sure to occasion, not alone in the sporting circles of this county, but in many other parts of the country likewise. - Twenty years ago there was no more popular name in the county than that of the dashing, handsome young horseman from Mallow. Indeed, the various successes of the late excellent sportsman and his celebrated horse "Spencer" still furnish the subject of song and story around the rural firesides of Orrery and Duhallow. During the last few years his increasing infirmities rendered necessary his withdrawal from the active arena of "the field," but still the ardour of his interest in the noble amusement suffered no diminution. In another sphere also, that of poor-law guardian, his zealous exertions in behalf of the poor of the district won the respect and gratitude of the poor. The remains of the lamented gentleman were yesterday escorted by a large assemblage from his late residence, Riverview, Kanturk, and interred in the Chapel yard of the latter town, all the shops in which were closed as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased. May God have mercy on his soul!
