(London Illustrated News 3/3/1866) – THE FENIAN CONSPIRACY IN IRELAND - …..[In Cork and other parts of the country] searches for arms and arrests are going on simultaneously. Hitherto the seizures have not been many. The police have been active in Cork and Queenstown, and have arrested five men, lately returned from America, one of whom, Fitzgerald, had £400 in his possession…..A military court-martial was held, on Monday week and several following days, in Cork barracks, to inquire into charges preferred against Drum-Major Farrell, 2nd Regiment; Sergeant Durrah, 2nd Regiment; Sergeant Butler, 32nd Regiment; and Private Conroy and Corporal James Rose, of the 20th Regiment…..[Illustration of the trail of Corporal Rose] The offence charged against him was that of saying, in the presence of Constable Carson, of the Irish Constabulary service, ‘This rifle is loaded. I’m an Irishman from the county Clare, and a Fenian. All the Irish soldiers are Fenians, and if they are called out they will never fire on the people;’ being conduct prejudicial of good order and military discipline, and contrary to the Articles of War. The prisoner, in his defence, denied altogether the truth of the charge. The trial, however, resulted in a verdict of guilty; the sentence is not yet known…..
(London Illustrated News 10/3/1866) – THE FENIAN CONSPIRACY IN IRELAND – The movement of troops into Ireland is still going on…..Arrests continue to be made all over the country. Eleven men charged at Skibbereen, on Wednesday week, with being concerned in the Fenian conspiracy, were brought to Cork next day, and lodged in the county gaol. Our local correspondent has sent us a sketch, which illustrates a very unusual scene, even in Cork. The Fenian and other prisoners had always been guarded by the police force; and it is only since the new Act has come into operation that the military have been used for the purpose. The prisoners brought from Skibbereen were in the act of entering the county prison when the sketch was made…..
