__________________________________________________________________________________________(CE 14/1/1850) – DEATH OF MR. JAMES DALY – Mr. James Daly, one of the most respected and influential of our fellow-citizens, expired at his residence on the evening of Friday, in the 75th year of his age, and was followed to the grave this morning by a large number of the citizens of Cork, to whom his worth was long known, and by whom his memory will be cherished. Mr. Daly had been for a considerable time in delicate health, and was frequently given over by his physicians for the last year; and his death was thus rather a happy release from suffering, than an event which his relatives could bitterly deplore as unexpected. Mr. Daly was remarkable during life for the possession of strong common sense, and the readiness which he applied that rare mental faculty to the consideration of the important questions that agitated the public mind during his career as a citizen of high position and established reputation. His views on most questions were liberal and enlightened, while his mode of expressing them was simple, manly, and energetic, and always calculated to command attention and respect. But he had higher merit still, he was considerate and humane and most charitable. We well remember how, in the awful year of scarcity, he mainly assisted in keeping down the local markets, which had risen to the starvation point, in spite of the free influx of foreign grain. At that time, he sold food to the poor considerably under the price of the day, and was thus the means, under Providence, of saving many a human being from perishing, not only in this city, but in those various places which were fearfully influenced by the rise or fall of the price of human food at this central market. To crown his many acts of benevolence, he gave, during last year, the munificent sum of £1,000 to the most deserving charities of Cork – doing this whilst living, which most men leave to be done by their executors. Independent in bearing, upright in character, sincere in friendship, and strong in his affections, Mr. James Daly, was worthy of respect and love while in this life, and deserves to be remembered with gratitude in death. May he rest in peace.

(CE 7/10/1850)TO THE EDITOR OF THE CORK EXAMINER - SIR – I respectfully beg leave to state that I have been employed for nearly the last eighteen years – nine years of said time on board the Ocean Steamer – five years and some months in the Preussischer Adler, both Vessels commanded by Captain Tooker, and the remaining part of said time employed in the same capacity among the other steam-vessels of the St. George’s Steam Packet Company, during which time I have conducted myself in a manner strictly honest, sober, and attentive to my business in every respect when called on. It had been reported by some ill-disposed persons, that I have stated that the Preussischer Adler was lost, and all hands on board, in her passage from Cork to London, which I strongly deny in every respect. I left the said boat in Plymouth, at 5 o clock on the morning of Saturday, the 29th ultimo, on her passage to London, in consequence of my inform state of health, knowing that I would not be able to do my duty on board. I consulted with the head engineer, Mr. George Patterson, who consented to have me return home, which I did, on board the Royal William, which sailed from Plymouth on Saturday morning at 9 ½ o clock, and arrived in Passage in or about 3 or 4 o'clock. I was in Barrack-street at a quarter past six o clock, in company with James Perrott, of the Lower Glanmire road, fireman, who returned in consequent of taking a drop of drink to excess. When we arrived in Cork so unexpectedly, there was a general rumour in that neighbourhood that the vessel was lost, and all hands. This I contradicted in the strongest form, and said that it was quite false, saying to those persons that the vessel arrived safe to Plymouth, and all hands therein safe, and was on her way to London, and that I knew no more of her. I defy them to bring any person forward to prove that I am the inventor of that base falsehood. Please to let the public know as to my innocence of this charge, and you will greatly oblige your very humble servant, - PATRICK M’CARTHY, Late Fireman on board the Preussischer Adler

Cabinet MakerMr. Brash conceived that such an act on the part of Mr. Fletcher should not pass unnoticed. He therefore begged to move, that the thanks of the meeting be voted to Mr. Fletcher, for the interest he took in the Society and his exertion to forward the movement. - Mr. B. Sheehan seconded the motion, which was unanimously adopted. - A communication was read from the nailors, in which they stated that hose of their body (124) now employed, earned but 7s a week, whereas, in former times, there were 300 of them employed who earned 30s a week. They stated that the wrought nails were more economical than those made by machinery, and besought the community to pledge themselves to use no other than wrought nails. - Mr. Dempster remarked that the nailers had failed to furnish the society with the statistics which they had promised. - Mr. Brash stated that he had during the past week given an order, on the part of a gentleman in the country, for 30,000 wrought mails, and that he in a short time would give an order for a larger quantity of a similar description on his own account (hear). He conceived the wrought nails were infinitely superior, and, in the end, more economical than those made by machinery. - The communication was referred to the Trades’ Committee. - The Secretary exhibited specimens of girth and roller web made by a poor weaver of the name of James Howard in Bandon. Everything in connection with them was manufactured in the country, and the weaver himself dyed them in the superior manner in which they were exhibited (hear, hear). He encountered two great difficulties in his trade – the want of materials and of a market; but even under these difficulties he was able to see his goods much cheaper than those manufactured in England. He (the Secretary) directed him to send into the society statistical information of the raw materials he used in his trade, of his prices &c., and that in return, the society would furnish him with all the assistance in their power; that is, that they would direct him where to obtain most cheaply the raw material, and would endeavour to procure a market for his goods. - Mr. O Brien stated that he called on Howard in Bandon, and was informed that he had two looms, which would work off 150 yards of piece work in the week, and that the great difficulty he had was, as the Secretary had stated, the want of the raw material. - Mr. P Hegarty thought it well to have it understood, that the Society did not intend to procure – in fact, could not procure, the raw materials for the weaver or any other trade. All the Society could do, was to give parties all the information in their power, and to endeavour to make or procure a market (hear, hear)....’
EARLY CLOSING - (CE 14/1/1850) TO THE EDITOR OF THE CORK EXAMINER - SIR – Through the medium of your valuable journal, I seek the liberty of calling public attention to the early closing movement in Dublin, and impressing on the minds of Principals of Commercial Establishments in Cork, the necessity of adhering to the short hour system, so essential to the moral and intellectual improvement of their assistants. - Man is but the steward of the wealth and influence God has given him. That wealth and influence should be used for the benefit of his fellow-creature, to ameliorate his condition and insure his happiness in this world, and the world to come. And where is there a class of men that require more the fostering-care of their Principals, that the Commercial Assistant? What was their condition before the system of early closing was adopted? Depressed in body and mind by want of inhaling the pure air of heaven, their physical energies exhausted by incessant fatigue, their intellects enfeebled and diseased by want of mental cultivation, the sands of life quickly ran out and they passed into eternity. In many instances the possessors of talents that would have done honour to human nature, and the country which gave them birth, have sunk into an untimely grave, who, under more favourable circumstances, might have risen to the highest pinnacle of intellectual greatness. By every feeling of philanthropy, let the Principals of Commercial Houses take this matter into serious consideration, and unite in carrying out such a benevolent movement. No man should mar its progress; it would be a source of saddening reflection that he lost this opportunity of promoting the happiness and welfare of his fellow-beings; on the contrary it will shed a halo of peace around his heart to think he had in any measure acted on that divine injunction – ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ - That such will address themselves to this work of humanity and labour of love, is, Mr. Editor, the earnest desire and hope of – Your most obedient servant, - ROBERT R. BRASH - Clontarf, Jan. 10th, 1850
(CE 16/1/1850) THE GROCERS’ ASSISTANTS of CORK beg to return their sincere thanks to the following Employers, who, in the most generous manner, responded to an appeal made to them for closing their shops at an earlier hour. - The Assistants are in confident expectation, that a cause which has elicited so much of public approbation – and such unanimity amongst the Employers – will be carried out successfully, contrary to the isolated instances opposed to its practical adoption.
